BROKEN BOW— The Broken Bow City Council held their regular meeting on Tuesday, November 12, the meeting however, was anything but normal.
To begin, the council discussed a possible amendment to the abandonment, neglect, and mistreatment ordinance after two situations over the summer resulted in a sheep and a pig being slaughtered in city limits which was reportedly not a ‘clean slaughter.’
Council President Rod Sonnichsen also told the public that there was an audience that was mainly children. The amended section of the ordinance was taken directly from the city ordinance of Lexington, but after some discussion there appeared to be conflicting wording between the amended section and definitions in the original ordinance.
No decision was made and the second reading of the ordinance could be heard at the next meeting.
The council did approve the use of ATV/UTV’s for the removal of snow. Broken Bow Police Chief Steve Scott informed the council that it was brought to his attention that residents wanted to use the vehicles for snow removal, but did not want to register it as a recreational vehicle as approved at a previous meeting.
There are still requirements to using ATV/UTV’s in city limits even to remove snow. Please refer to city ordinances, contact City Clerk Stephanie Wright, or the Broken Bow Police Department if there are any questions regarding specifics about ATV/UTV use inside Broken Bow city limits.
Also approved was the expenditures for the employee appreciation banquet as well as the city voting unanimously to support the Custer County YMCA which is still in the planning stages.
The final approval before the grievance hearing was setting the recall election date for Mayor Jonathon Berghorst. Due to regulations that must be followed for a special election, the recall election date has been set for January 14, 2020. More details concerning the election will be released when available.
Following the grievance hearing the council entered executive session for the purpose of a strategy session regarding collective bargaining.
The Board of Public Works is scheduled to have a meeting at 12:30 PM at the Broken Bow Municipal Building on November 25.
The next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 26 at 6 PM at the Broken Bow Public Library.
