Who is he?
Townsend is a Nebraska native, and he was heavily featured in the season 17 premiere of “American Idol.” Townsend wowed the judges with both his singing and his personal story, and he’s advancing to the Hollywood round.
What’s his story?
Townsend graduated from Tekamah-Herman High School. Afterwards, he joined the performing arts college of the Young Americans’ performing troupe. He has taught and performed throughout the U.S. and overseas.
Before “American Idol,” Townsend was a contestant on two seasons of “The Voice.”
Townsend sadly lost both of his brothers to suicide, and he’s using his platform on “American Idol” to sing, of course, but also to talk about depression, suicide and perseverance.
How did his “Idol” audition go?
Very, very well. Townsend brought judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan to tears. During his audition, he sang James Bay’s “Let It Go.”
“There’s a wonderful quality in your voice that you cannot study. It’s called a natural cry. In our business, we call that ‘money,’ ” Richie said.

Townsend advanced to the following segment of “American Idol,” where singers face off during the show’s next step in Hollywood.
There are several rounds in Hollywood, where singers perform solo or in groups, and the judges decide who stays.
When will we see him again?
Auditions and the Hollywood rounds were filmed late last year. Audition episodes will air through most of March. Hollywood episodes typically air over one week in late March or early April.
The Hollywood rounds typically winnow the field to 24 contestants. Live episodes featuring the final dozen or so contestants will follow.
