Video surveillance and tips from the public led Lincoln police to an 18-year-old man who they say smashed windows of 62 vehicles and houses, mostly in northeast Lincoln.

The vandalism, which caused an estimated $25,000 damage, began after 3 a.m. June 5, police said. Incidents were reported from about 34th and Y Streets to 61st and Vine Streets.

Witnesses told police the vandals were in a dark-colored hatchback and were smashing windows with a baseball bat or golf club.

On Sunday, a car suspected of being involved in the vandalism was located in northeast Lincoln, and the owner let police search the vehicle. Officers found a bat and a golf club inside.
