Two male students were taken to a Lincoln hospital Thursday after a bottle of acid ruptured at a University of Nebraska-Lincoln research center. The two — 22 and 19 years of age — suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, UNL reported. One suffered facial cuts, and the other suffered inhalation burns. UNL used the term “ruptured” instead of “exploded.” Assistant Fire Chief Pat Borer said the discharge took place about 2:30 p.m. The two were taken to St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, Borer said. The incident took place at the Voelte-Keegan Nanoscience Research Center, which is attached to Jorgensen Hall near 16th and Vine Streets on UNL’s City Campus. It was unknown late Thursday afternoon what caused the bottle to rupture, UNL police reported. UNL said the danger was contained to one room, but Jorgensen Hall was evacuated. The building reopened Thursday evening.
