Two injured, one dead after single-vehicle accident in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- Sunday evening police officers were dispatched to a personal injury crash at 31st Street and Ames Avenue.  

Police say that the investigation revealed a 2008 Chevy Malibu was headed eastbound on Ames when it swerved to the left where they crossed into the westbound lanes at the 31st Street intersection. 

The vehicle then left the roadway and crashed into a traffic signal pole. All three of the occupants were transported by Omaha Fire Medics to Nebraska Medicine their injuries ranged from serious to life threatening. 

The driver, 24-year-old Akyma McWilliams of Omaha was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Nebraska Medicine. 

The front seat passenger, 20-year-old Nairobi Ford of Omaha is being treated for an amputated leg injury as well as lacerations to his chest. 

The rear seat passenger, Samuel Yata is being treated for lacerations to his legs. Yata was 21 at the time of the accident, but turned 22 Monday morning. 

Ames Avenue was closed until 11 p.m. between 30th and 33rd streets.
