Two cases keep Chadron Police busy Thursday

The Chadron Police Department responded to multiple felony incidents Thursday.

At approximately 10:22p.m., Chadron Police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of West Second Street to investigate an assault that happened inside a bar. The officers arrived to the location and began interviewing witnesses and victims. During the investigation, officers had contact with the suspect of the reported assault, 25-year-old Taure Lame. Lame provided the officers with a statement of what happened and then became argumentative with the officers.

Lame escalated from arguing with the officers to assaulting an officer, and struck an officer with a kick. The officers on scene attempted to control Lame, but she continued to resist arrest and kicked and bit a second officer. Officers deployed a taser to cease Lame’s assaultive behavior and the officers gained control and placed her into custody.

The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department rescue unit was called to the scene and evaluated Lame for injuries. Lame was medically cleared and transported to the Dawes County Jail for Assault on a Peace Officer in the Third Degree (Class IIIA Felony) and Resisting Arrest (Class I Misdemeanor). Bond was set at 10% of $25,000.

Also, on Thursday, at approximately 11:30p.m., officers were called to the parking lot of the High Rise residence hall at Chadron State College to investigate an alleged terroristic threat.

Officers contacted two female students who reported having been followed in their vehicle by another vehicle in a harassing manner from the Chadron State Park area and Highway 385 into Chadron’s city limits. As they were being followed by the vehicle, the female students contacted two male friends, one of whom was a residence hall advisor, requesting help as they returned to campus. Both male students who were contacted met the females in the parking lot. The male students then attempted to contact the driver of the suspect vehicle to find out what was going on.

When the male students contacted the male driver of the suspect vehicle, the male driver reportedly brandished a sawed-off shotgun at one of the male students. The male students walked away from the situation, contacted the Chadron Police Department, and reported the male driver had fled the scene in his vehicle, traveling east on Tenth Street. Chadron Police interviewed the witnesses and victims involved in the case and worked with Chadron State College Security to secure video images of the male driver and his vehicle. Based on the description of the suspect vehicle and description of the male driver from the witnesses, along with the video evidence, Chadron Police officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle and the suspect male driver on the 200 block of Shelton Street shortly after the terroristic threat occurred.

Chadron Police detained the suspect male and applied for a search warrant to search the residence and several vehicles located on the property for firearms and ammunition. During the service of the search warrant, officers located a short shotgun in violation of Nebraska State Statutes, along with ammunition for the shotgun and two pellet guns. As a result of the investigation, 25-year-old Dean W. Hawley of Crawford, Nebraska, was placed under arrest. Hawley was remanded to the Dawes County Jail for Terroristic Threats (Class IIIA Felony), Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony (IC Felony), Possession of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony (II Felony) and Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person (ID Felony). His bond was set at 10% of $100,000. Additional charges are pending.

The Chadron Police Department received assistance with this investigation from the Nebraska State Patrol, Dawes County Sheriff’s Office, Chadron State College Housing and Residence Life, and Chadron State College Security.
