State patrol identifies victims killed in crash along Tri-County Canal

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Two people were killed Thursday after their vehicle crashed into a canal near Maxwell, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers received a call around 1:45 p.m. of a vehicle in the Tri-County Canal, about two miles west of Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

According to LCSO Chief Deputy Roland Kramer, the driver of the Chevrolet pickup lost control as it was approaching the curve near the intersection of State Farm Road and Box Elder Road before rolling into the canal.

The truck was 80 percent submerged in the water when law enforcement arrived at the scene. A male was pulled from the vehicle. A female was also recovered by the Lincoln County Dive Team. Both occupants, Alex Sanchez, 74, of North Platte and Kimberly McCarter, 52, of Papillion were pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Lincoln County Dive Team assisted.
