Slick road conditions blamed for fatal crash near Creston, Iowa

Slick road conditions contributed to a fatal head-on crash Sunday just west of Creston, Iowa, authorities said.

The name of the person who was pronounced dead at the scene was being withheld pending notification of family, according to an Iowa State Patrol report. The driver of the second vehicle, Emily M. Haidsiak, 21, of Creston, and an infant passenger were taken to Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston for treatment of their injuries.

Investigators determined that Haidsiak, who was driving a 1998 Dodge pickup truck, was westbound about 12:15 p.m. on U.S. Highway 34 when she lost control and the pickup crossed the center line. It collided with an eastbound 2017 Chrysler minivan. That driver, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was killed.

The road was covered with snow and slush at the time of the collision, investigators said. Haidsiak was wearing a seat belt.
