Sidney holds annual tree giveaway for Arbor Day celebration

SIDNEY, NE — Several Sidney residents have new trees to add to their yards after the town’s annual tree giveaway on Saturday.

Over 75 people gathered at the Lodgepole Valley Youth Camp for the event. The free tree giveaway is part of Sidney’s Arbor Day celebration. The celebration is one of multiple items the city must do in order to earn Tree City USA recognition. The city has earned the honor for 35 consecutive years.

Sidney Parks Superintendent Tom Von Seggern presented city council man Brad Sherman with a Tree City USA Flag as part of the festivities.

Multiple species of trees were available. Chrissy Land from the Nebraska Forest Service gave residents tips on how to best plant and care for the trees based on the species they chose. She also led a planting demonstration with the help of local boy scouts.

The Sidney Tree Board is offered nine species of trees this year. They include: Hackberry, Triumph Elm, Thorn-less Hawthorn, Bur Oak, Profusion Crabapple, Mesabi Cherry, Ponderosa Pine, Limber Pine and Austrian Pine.
