Seven Nebraskans, including one doctor, charged in national health care fraud takedown

Seven people in Nebraska were among 601 people charged nationwide in a Justice Department crackdown on health care fraud. The seven people were charged in connection with five separate schemes to defraud Medicare, Medicaid and other Department of Health and Human Services programs. One of those arrested in Nebraska is a doctor, according to the press release. The nationwide takedown included charges against 165 doctors, nurses and other licensed medical professionals alleging that they were involved in schemes involving more than $2 billion in false billings. An additional 76 doctors were charged on suspicion of wrongly prescribing and distributing opioids. “Health care fraud is a betrayal of vulnerable patients, and often it is theft from the taxpayer,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. “These are despicable crimes.” Further details were unavailable.
