Security guard shoots attacker in fight at Mexican restaurant in Lincoln

A security guard shot a man after he was attacked during an altercation at a Lincoln Mexican restaurant.

The skirmish occurred about 2 a.m. Sunday at La Cabana near 32nd Street and Cornhusker Highway. A 41-year-old security guard was trying to break up a fight between two people who had knives.

One 27-year-old man approached the guard and made slashing motions with the knife, Lincoln police said. The guard wrestled the knife away from the man and put him in a chokehold, but the man continued to punch the guard.

Another security guard, who is 25, tried to help but was attacked by three other men, police said. That guard fired multiple warning shots, police said, but the men continued to fight. The guard then shot one attacker, a 32-year-old man, in the shoulder.

The 25-year-old guard and the man he shot both were taken to a Lincoln hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making terroristic threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
