SE corner of Nebraska sees heavy rain, flash flooding

BEATRICE – Strong thunderstorms carried torrential rain and high winds, causing flash flooding and some damage, overnight.  Several storm and damage reports were received by the National Weather Service.  

Northeast of Auburn, floodwaters went over U.S. Highway 136 because of plugged drainage tubes. Floodwaters went over Nebraska Highways 8 and 159 in the Salem and Preston areas.

Falls city received 5.45 inches of rain….and Hamburg, Iowa received three inches of rain in about a half-hour.   Reserve, Kansas, just south of Falls City, got 4.24 inches of rain.  Bennet, Nebraska had 4.2 inches of rain within one hour.  Pawnee City received 2.75 inches of rain in less than three hours.  Nearby, the Bern, Kansas area received 3.97 inches of rain.

In southwest Iowa, some rail cars were blown over along Interstate 29, near Hamburg.  Interstate 29 at Mound City, Missouri was closed through early Friday morning because of floodwaters.

Flooding closed a couple of county roads near Sabetha, Kansas.

A tree was blown onto a house at Riverton, Iowa.
