Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitors Center holds ribbon cutting

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held Friday for the renovated Visitors Center at Scotts Bluff National Monument in Gering. Officials with the National Parks Service and the city of Gering spoke at the event.

The official ceremony marking the reopening of the Visitors Center was delayed from last year by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Monument Superintendent Dan Morford couldn’t be more pleased.

Morford told the audience that it was “a very special day (that) just kind of brings it all to a close,” ending about 7 years that began with planning and ending with more than 2 years of renovation and new construction.

Friday also marked the grand opening by the Black Hills Parks and Forests Association of a new park store inside the visitor center.

The center is currently limited to 25 visitors at a time with masks required when inside, or if outdoors in a situation where social distancing is not possible.
