Ricketts announces incentive plan to combat staff shortages

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska prison system is getting a new incentive plan to fill staff positions, as are a few other departments.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced the plan on Friday. The plan consists of bonuses for employees with the Departments of Correctional Services, Health and Human Services, and Veterans Affairs.

Incentives will include commuting, transfer and retention bonuses.

Earlier this month, it was reported more than 25 percent of Nebraska's corrections facilities were in a staffing emergency. That means some staff members at the facilities have been working 12-hour shifts.

The first bonuses will be paid in September.
