A woman’s purse that contained a wedding ring valued at $629,000 was stolen from her SUV on Saturday in the Creighton Prep High School parking lot.
On Sunday, Omaha police detectives booked into jail a 60-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman in connection with the theft.
Police were called about 3:20 p.m. Saturday after a woman found her purse missing from her locked vehicle, a 2005 Lexus RX 350, which had its passenger window broken. The purse had the woman’s wallet, credit cards, checkbook and the wedding ring inside.
The theft occurred Saturday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the high school near 72nd Street and Western Avenue.
A witness saw a man checking door handles during that time. The witness later saw the man get into another car, and the witness took down the car’s license plate number.
Detectives spoke to the registered owner of the car, the 51-year-old woman. After several interviews, the stolen items were found and the woman and the 60-year-old man were arrested.
Police reminded people that they never should leave valuable items in their vehicles, even if the vehicles are locked, because thieves can quickly break windows and steal things. People who see someone looking into car windows or trying to open doors are urged to call 911.
