One dead, two injured in head-on crash on U.S. Highway 30 in Iowa

A 28-year-old man died and two people were injured Tuesday night in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 30 about three miles northeast of Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Cody J. Grandmont of Persia, Iowa, was pronounced dead at a hospital in Missouri Valley, according to an Iowa State Patrol report. Rebecca E. Smith, 34, and Austin L. Tasich, 31, both of Council Bluffs, were taken by ambulance to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy in Omaha.

Investigators determined that Grandmont was headed west on Highway 30 in a 1999 Saturn SL1 about 6:45 p.m. when the car crossed the center line for an unknown reason. The Saturn collided with an eastbound 1998 Buick Century driven by Smith.

Neither Grandmont nor Smith was wearing a seat belt, the report said. The highway was closed in both directions during the crash investigation.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
