A 23-year-old woman accused of driving under the influence and then fatally hitting a man with her car was ordered held on bail Friday.
Meghan Moyers, also known as Meghan Kinsey, has been charged with manslaughter. A judge on Friday set her bail at $250,000. She must pay 10 percent of that, or $25,000, to be released from jail.
Authorities have said that after 1 a.m. Tuesday, Moyers was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima north on the North Freeway near Lake Street when her car struck a vehicle driven by Jerome Payton Jr. from behind.
The collision caused the 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe that Payton was driving to go off the roadway and roll after hitting a metal light pole. Payton, 32, was ejected from the SUV — police said he was not wearing a seat belt. Payton was declared dead at the scene.
Moyers’ Altima continued for 100 yards before the vehicle stopped. Officers tested Moyers’ blood-alcohol content after she was taken into custody. It tested at 0.066, according to an affidavit.
Moyers told officers that she drank “more than one but less than two shots of vodka,” and said that the vehicle in front of her had “stopped in the middle of the road,” according to the affidavit.
Officers tried to clarify what she meant, asking whether the other vehicle was moving or completely stopped, and Moyers said, “It wasn’t like they were halted,” the affidavit said.
They again sought to clarify what she meant. Moyers said she didn’t know how to describe it other than the driver of the vehicle suddenly pressed on the brakes.
If convicted, Moyers faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
