Officials: Prison ‘Walkaway’ Stole Car, Rammed Cruiser/Took Fire, Can’t Be Found

Omaha, NE.— Omaha police aren't saying point blank but do the math—and it's not calculus—and an inmate who "walked away" from an Omaha prison Wednesday is the same man accused of ramming an officer's patrol car, then getting away as the officer fired three shots. 30-year-old Nicholas Hupp—who is serving up to 39 years in prison for theft, drug dealing and "obstructing a police officer" in Douglas and Sarpy counties—"ran out" of the Omaha Community Corrections Center, while being searched, according to a news release from the Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections website uses the word "escape" in describing Hupp's current status. Police will only say the Officer Involved Investigative Team "would like to interview Hupp, along with others, regarding the officer involved shooting incident" which occurred early Friday morning near the Henry Doorly Zoo at 13th and I-80. Following the shooting police say they found the getaway car—which was stolen from Carter Lake, not far from the prison—abandoned about a mile away from the zoo with three bullet holes but no driver.
