New jail to come with mental illness plan

PAPILLION, Neb. — A new Sarpy County Jail will come with a new plan to help inmates with mental illness.

When the new jail opens in 2023, the county and the University of Nebraska Medical Center will create the state’s first forensic psychiatry fellowship that will assess and treat prisoners.

The five-year deal finds the county paying $1.2 million

Inmates will be provided psychiatric treatment, medication, and help with medication management.
