Sarah Rose Summers, the Miss USA contestant from Nebraska who is competing in the Miss Universe pageant, has taken to Instagram to apologize for a video where she appeared to mock contestants from Cambodia and Vietnam.

Summers, in an Instagram post, apologized and said the pageant is an opportunity for women to learn from each other.

“In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize,” she said. “My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another.”

In the video, posted on Instagram Live, Summers asks Miss Colombia Valeria Morales and Miss Australia Francesca Hung about Miss Vietnam H’Hen Nie.

“She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English,” Summers said. “And then you ask her a question — after having a whole conversation with her — and she goes” and Summers mimed smiling and nodding, then laughed.

Later in the video, she says “Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English, and not a single other person speaks her language. Can you imagine? Like Francesca said that would be so isolating and I said yes and I mean and just confusing all the time.”

Some commenters accused her of being racist while others stuck up for her.
