A pair of traffic stops Sunday, including one after a high-speed chase, resulted in Nebraska State Patrol troopers seizing multiple illegal drugs.
Troopers arrested two men on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver after observing a Ford Mustang traveling at 105 mph on Interstate 80 near Paxton, a patrol spokesman said. The Mustang fled from an attempted traffic stop, passing vehicles by driving on the shoulder of the road at 7:45 a.m. CST.
After approximately two miles, the Mustang exited at the Paxton interchange, drove down the ramp embankment and back up toward I-80. The car then went airborne at the top of the embankment and spun out in the traffic lanes before colliding with a metal guardrail.
The two men inside the vehicle ran and were captured a short time later, the spokesman said. Troopers found multiple packages of high-grade marijuana and THC products, totaling about 6 pounds.
The 32-year-old driver was also arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest and obstructing an officer. He and his 23-year-old passenger, both of Peoria, Illinois, were booked into the Keith County Jail.
At approximately 3:43 p.m. MST, a trooper observed an eastbound Nissan Sentra speeding on Interstate 76 near Big Springs, the spokesman said. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected criminal activity and conducted a search of the vehicle.
The search revealed 13 pounds of cocaine and three pounds of heroin hidden under a false floor beneath the front seats. The 30-year-old driver from Chicago and his 47-year-old passenger from Philadelphia were arrested for possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver and booked into the Deuel County Jail.
