The Nebraska State Treasurer's Office wants to return military medals found in safe deposit boxes to their owners.
The unclaimed property division receives the contents of more than 200 safe deposit boxes in Nebraska banks each year, according to Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg. Items include jewelry, savings bonds and medals, among other things.
The office has six military medals from four deposit boxes, including those belonging to Mary and Patsy Turner of Lincoln, Marijane Austin of Plattsmouth and Adrian and Andre Perry of Bellevue. It also is in possession of a 1991 Rifle and Grenade medal with no owner listed.
“We would very much like to find the rightful owners of these medals and return them to their owners or their families,” Stenberg said in a press release. “These medals are tangible reminders of the sacrifices made throughout our history by our brave men and women in the service of our country.”
The treasurer keeps all medals until they are returned to their owners or the owners' relatives. Any military medal removed from a safe deposit box eventually is turned over to the treasurer for safekeeping. The medals are not included in the department's online auctions.
