A 45-year-old man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting deaths of two men in Holdrege earlier this week.
Deputy Phelps County Attorney Natalie Nelsen announced the charges against Manuel Gomez of Holdrege, Nebraska, on Friday. Gomez was arrested Thursday in connection with the shooting deaths of two men and the wounding of a third man.
Around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Holdrege police officers responded to a report of a shooting at one address. Police later discovered additional crime scenes in multiple units at the Sunrise View Apartments at another address.
Raymond Burton, 65, and David Rogers, 54, were both found dead inside of separate units of the Sunrise View Apartments, according to a news release from the Nebraska State Patrol.
Doyle Morse, 64, was able to call 911 after he was shot at the first address, the release said. He is in serious condition at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
A vehicle owned by Gomez was seen traveling in the north part of Holdrege shortly after the shootings. The release said a short, low-speed pursuit ensued and Gomez drove to the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office. He was taken into custody without incident.
In addition to the first-degree murder charges, Gomez has also been charged with one count of first-degree assault, three counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of flight to avoid arrest.
Gomez was due in court Friday afternoon.
