National Hot Air Balloon Championships set for Scotts Bluff County

MITCHELL, Neb. (KNEP) - The Scotts Bluff County area set to host the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championships starting on Monday.

The week long event will feature 47 pilots from across the country accomplishing balloon tasks for key points.

The top three point getters at the end of the week will earn spots into the World Hot Air Balloon Championships.

The U.S. Nationals part of a busy week the Scotts Bluff County Area will have in store to celebrate the love of hot air balloons.

There will be two night glow events (Wednesday at Western Nebraska Community College and later in the week at Five Rocks in Gering) as well as the annual Old West Balloon Fest that will take place Saturday August 14th in Mitchell.

Fans can purchase an all week event pass for 20 dollars. Several locations will be selling passes including Platte Valley Bank, Pinnacle Bank, and Scotts Bluff County Chamber of Commerce.

Art in the Sky Exhibit in Scottsbluff

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) -In honor of the old west balloon fest the Nebraska arts center is hosting an art in the sky exhibit on August 4th 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This exhibit highlights the artistic value of regional artwork and its connection to the Panhandle through celebrations. The exhibits art work is joined with a contest that is opened to all of the Panhandle Valley. This includes varies techniques of photographs and artwork of hot air balloons.

Stephanie Coley, the program manager, tells us the prizes that can be won if you enter the contest.

she says, “There’s money that you can win, it depends on what award you get. Honorable mention usually gets money. And this year the first place winner of the photography gets a free balloon ride. So hopefully you enter!”
