Motorcyclist in Grand Island dies of injuries after crashing during 100-mph chase

A 27-year-old motorcyclist died early Wednesday after his motorcycle collided with a car in Grand Island after fleeing from authorities.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was driving a Kawasaki motorcycle 80 mph on South Locust Street in Grand Island about 12:10 a.m. Wednesday. Nebraska State Patrol troopers tried to stop the motorcyclist, officials said, but he sped off.

Troopers pursued the man as he drove up to 100 mph, turning several times and heading north on U.S. Highway 281 until the motorcycle collided with a Volkswagen Passat at West Old Potash Highway.

The motorcyclist was taken to St. Francis Hospital and later pronounced dead. The driver of the Passat was not injured.

The pursuit lasted about five minutes.

The Grand Island Police Department is investigating the incident, the patrol said.
