Montana man dead after I-80 crash near Brule

BRULE, NE — Authorities say a crash late Friday night on Interstate 80 in western Nebraska claimed one life.

Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says 32-year-old Gabriel Becerra Garcia was traveling west on I-80 in a pickup at about 10:30 p.m. Friday. Garcia crossed the center line while driving through a construction zone and collided with an eastbound semi-truck head on.

Garcia, who is from Libby, Mont., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Thomas. Neither occupant of the semi was injured.

The crash snarled traffic on Interstate 80, leading to heavy traffic. A News Channel Nebraska employee was traveling in the area at the time. They reported being in standstill traffic for about two hours before being able to exit at Brule.

Thomas says the interstate was closed for four hours total.
