Hunter Shamatt must be the luckiest person to ever lose a wallet.
Earlier this month, he lost it on a flight from Omaha to Las Vegas.
Not only did a good Samaritan find it and mail it to Shamatt’s home in Brandon, South Dakota, but he sent it back fatter than when Shamatt lost it.
When the 20-year-old Shamatt lost his wallet, it had his identification, his debit card, a signed paycheck and $60 cash. It came back with all that, plus an extra $40.
“I rounded your cash up to an even $100 so you could celebrate getting your wallet back,” the finder wrote in a note that he included with the wallet. “Have fun!”
Hunter’s mother, Jeannie Shamatt, wrote about the fortunate turn of events in a Facebook post last week that she hoped would lead to the generous individual.
The post went viral, and by Monday, a co-worker of Todd Brown's, the man who found the wallet, helped make the connection.
Brown told Jeannie that he worked with Applied Underwriting in Omaha and was on a flight from Omaha to Denver when he found the wallet. Brown couldn’t immediately be reached Monday evening.
For Jeannie, the episode is an affirmation of something she’s tried to teach her kids. (Hunter couldn’t come to the phone Monday evening, his mother said, because he was sleeping so that he would be ready for work.)
“I try to teach my kids every day to be good to people and give when you can, it doesn’t matter the outcome,” she said. “It’s what you’re giving. Kindness comes back, and it did.”
