A 23-year-old man was taken into custody early Thursday after officials said he fired a shot at a Burt County sheriff’s deputy.
A relative of the man called the Sheriff’s Office about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, concerned that the man was suicidal, according to a statement from Burt County Sheriff Robert Pickell. About 12:20 a.m. Thursday, a deputy talked with the man as he sat in a vehicle and asked him to get out.
The man then fired a shot at the deputy, who was not injured. The deputy backed away and requested backup from officers from Tekamah, Decatur and the Nebraska State Patrol.
Officers set up a perimeter. About 2:20 a.m., Nebraska State Patrol troopers and a patrol K-9 handler located the man in an outbuilding near the farmhouse and he was taken into custody.
The Sheriff’s Office placed the man in emergency protective custody and the patrol took him to Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Charges are pending.
