Life expectancy drops, calculator gages differences

The national average life expectancy has dropped by a year, due to COVID-19, the CDC says

Dr. Dejun Su, of the University of Nebraska Medicine, led a team to create a life expectancy calculator for Nebraskans, a few years ago.

Su said the calculator may be updated with this new information.

Last week, he presented the calculator to the Digital 2021 Nebraska Conference on Health Equity.

Su said, more than anything, he wants people who use the calculator to take away a greater understanding of how where you live in the state affects your health risks. Things like crime rates, air pollution, and water contamination create big disparities that between the health and wellbeing of various Nebraska communities.
