Kids Learn the Rules of the Road with Driving Simulations

KEARNEY --- Children who want to learn the rules of the road can get a unique experience when they travel to Kearney for the Nebraska Safety Center's driver education course, which consists of driving simulators and an on-site driving range. The Nebraska Safety Center teaches an average of 760 students each year in locations spanning from West Point to Hastings to Chadron, but those who make a trip to the center near UNK get a little more of an advanced experience with an additional eight hours of time with driving simulators and an on-site driving range. The setup is located just south of UNK, and it consists simulators that have seat belts, gas and brake pedals, speedometers, gear shifts, and more. They can also be adjusted for situations such as driving in a city, on a highway, during the nighttime, in the rain, and in a crash-avoidance scenario. Participants who complete the program and are younger than 18 do not have to take the written or driving tests through the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles for certain permits.
