Kids Fishing Day tries to get youth hooked on fishing

SIDNEY, NE — It’s official, Kid’s Fishing Day is here.

Cabela’s and the Raider Anglers welcome families to the Legion Park Pond on Saturday, June 12, to enjoy the outdoors.

Children ages 12 and under will learn how to bait, cast and reel along with being eligible for prizes upon registration. Registration begins a 8:30 a.m. and offers fishing until 11 a.m.

Prizes consist of a good bag with supplies, door prizes and fishing equipment. Fish are also tagged throughout the pond, which can be redeemed for gift certificates at the Cabela’s Retail Store.

The Raider Anglers, also known as the Fishing Team, are volunteering at the event. Thursday, they helped Cabela's employees stock the pond in Legion Park for Saturday's activities.

Raider Angler President Presley Richards says she’s excited to teach a skill that has a positive impact on the lives of others.

“It gives me the opportunity to get out to the public and let everybody know that the fishing team is here and that we are here to help the kids.”

The Cabela’s Retail Store is also offering and indoor catch and release pond, free photos and crafts on Saturday, June 12, and 19.

Activities will begin at 11 a.m. and go until 4 p.m.

Lee Wiegand, who has worked for Cabela’s for 22 years, encourages everyone to take advantage of Kid’s Fishing Day.

“Just getting kids outside and getting them fishing,” Wiegand said. “If you’ve ever seen a kid catch their first fish, it’ll do it for you. You’ll do it again, I guarantee it.”
