JANSEN, NE — An annual fun day has turned into a whole weekend in Jansen.
The local volunteer fire department has always hosted a fundraising event during the second weekend of July. Now, the newly formed Jansen Community Events Committee is adding on to make it a three-day affair. Committee member Kesha Eldridge says they will raise money for fire department and more.
“Some of the funds are going to be donated to the Sheriff’s Department for a new K-9," Eldridge said. "Then, Jansen Community Events committee will keep some of the funds to do more events that we would like to see happen in Jansen in the future.”
A flea market, silent auction and beer garden start festivities on Friday. Saturday’s activities include a motorcycle show, road rally, cornhole tournament, tractor pull and more. Profits from the beer garden and Saturday dinner go directly to help the fire department expand its rescue set up.
“(We can buy) extrication tools, some rope stuff that we didn’t quite get out of our last grant," Operations Chief Eddie Grummert said. "Anything helps, it’s kind of an endless pit to get equipment, the prices keep going up.”
Eldridge says this could be the start of an annual tradition.
“I think we’ve had a ton of support from the community," Eldridge said. "If this is what people want, I think we’ll do it again.”
