Health alerts include Wirth Brothers Lake

LINCOLN - The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy has issued a health alert for Wirth Brothers Lake in Johnson County.

Samples taken earlier this week measured above the threshold of 8 parts per billion of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

Based on recommendations issued in 2019, the state adopted this threshold.

Signs are posted to advise the public not to be exposed to the water. Beaches are closed, but boating and fishing are permitted.

The health alert is also for Willow Creek Reservoir in Pierce County and Swan Creek Lake in Saline County.
