LINCOLN – Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts slammed a new tax proposal that was unveiled Wednesday by the state Legislature’s Revenue Committee.
The plan would reduce property taxes by boosting state aid to K-12 schools, raising the state sales tax and eliminating tax exemptions.
The governor said the plan strips taxpayers of relief delivered through the Property Tax Credit Relief Fund, raises the state’s sales tax 14 percent and slaps new taxes on key services, including heating and air conditioning and plumbing.
The Revenue Committee’s plan would increase state aid to school from about $1 billion to $1.5 billion per year. The committee says school property taxes would decline by an average of 20 percent.
