A 30-year-old Texas woman who was arrested on suspicion of criminal homicide after being accused of stabbing her boyfriend Saturday night in Omaha was defending herself, according to a relative.
Amir Bey, 30, of Houston, died at Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, said a spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Crystal Gross, 30, also of Houston, was arrested on suspicion of criminal homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
Judy Gross of Houston, the suspect's mother, said she and her daughter were in Omaha for the wedding of another daughter. Gross said she had left the home at 16914 Grand Ave. before the altercation.
"They were really getting into (an argument) earlier," Gross said. "But it was definitely self-defense. I don't want to say too much, though."
Crystal Gross hadn't been dating Bey very long, her mother said. The couple had recently announced their own engagement.
"That surprised me," Judy Gross said. "I thought (Amir) was jumping into something pretty quick."
Chief Deputy Tom Wheeler of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to the Grand Avenue home about 9 p.m. to investigate an assault. Deputies performed lifesaving measures on Bey until paramedics arrived to take him to the hospital.
Gross was arrested at the scene and booked into the Douglas County Jail. A neighbor said Bey and Gross were houseguests at the home.
An autopsy has been ordered for Bey, Wheeler said. Anyone with information in the investigation is encouraged to call the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at (402) 444-7996.
