Free Speech For Student Journalists Bill Advances

LINCOLN – A bill protecting free-speech rights of student journalists has once again been introduced in the legislature, and has won first-round approval.

Senator Adam Morfeld of Lincoln introduced the measure last year to prevent high school administrators from censoring articles they dislike. The bill also prevents administrators from retaliating against faculty advisers who defend a student’s right to publish.

Along with added freedoms, the bill would also hold students directly accountable for stories that are deemed libelous.
