Fortenberry Calls Trump-Kim Summit Historic

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Jeff Fortenberry  today issued the following statement on the meeting between President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in Singapore:

“President Trump’s move towards engagement with North Korea is historic, bold, and would have been unimaginable – just months ago – given the heightened threat environment from North Korea,” Fortenberry said.

Fortenberry is a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations.

Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement:

Smith: "President Trump’s meeting with Kim Jong Un is a vital and positive step forward. The path ahead will not be easy, but I believe President Trump and his national security team are fully capable of recognizing real progress as opposed to hollow promises. "President Reagan confronted longtime adversaries on the basis of “trust, but verify,” and any worthwhile agreement with North Korea will include nothing less than complete and verifiable denuclearization.

“Today’s joint Trump-Kim statement, if fully realized, lays the foundation for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, a dramatically new and constructive era in U.S.-North Korea relations, and a peaceful and prosperous future for the North and South Korean people.”
