A former Republican staffer who was outed for posting racist, anti-Jewish and homophobic material online has left a fledgling group that opposes Nebraska’s medical marijuana petition drive.
Bennett Bressman, a former staffer for Gov. Pete Ricketts’ campaign, has left the group Smart Approaches to Marijuana of Nebraska, according to the group’s volunteer coordinator, Mary Hilton.
Hilton said everyone involved in the group is a volunteer.
“Mr. Bressman is no longer volunteering on this effort, and we hope he gets the education and help that he needs,” she said in a statement. “His comments are inexcusable and in no way reflect the views of anyone else engaged in our efforts.”
Anti-Fascist Action Nebraska published Bressman’s more than 3,000 anonymous comments that he wrote on a private chat room operated by a white nationalist.
Ricketts said he was “shocked and horrified” to learn of Bressman’s posts and condemned “this hateful world view.”
Bressman, 22, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln student, did not respond to requests for comment but told the Lincoln Journal Star on Monday that he regretted the comments.
