COUNCIL BLUFFS — Council Bluffs firefighters found a man’s body after putting out a blaze Tuesday at an apartment in a house on the corner of 30th Street and Avenue C.

The Council Bluffs Fire Department was called to 221 N. 30th St. shortly after 3 p.m. Fire Chief Justin James said it didn’t take long for firefighters to knock down the fire.

During a search of the apartment, fire crews found the dead man. Authorities did not release the man’s name.

Fire officials said they were unsure if the person died because of the fire or from another cause.

“We’re not sure on a cause of death yet,” James said.

The building is a two-story home split into four apartments, according to James. The fire occurred in the northwest apartment on the second floor.

Shane Pohlman of Omaha is listed as the property owner, according to Pottawattamie County assessor records. Neighbors said they believed all four residences were occupied.

A neighbor said he saw heavy smoke billowing from the window of the apartment and alerted authorities. He said a man lives in the apartment where the fire occurred.

Fire investigators and police were on the scene as well.

An investigation into the fire continues, with the police and fire departments working with the state and city Fire Marshal’s Office and Pottawattamie County Medical Examiner’s Office.
