FAIRBURY, NE — A southeast Nebraska doctor is getting national exposure through a popular podcast.

Dr. Brett Wergin is a family medicine specialist at Jefferson Community Health and Life in Fairbury. He was a guest on the “Today, Explained” podcast, a daily news explainer created by Vox. Wergin appeared on the “Can we get to 70%” episode published on Wednesday.

The episode focuses on efforts to increase access to COVID-19 vaccines in rural America. President Joe Biden recently said his administration will start distributing vaccine doses directly to physicians. Wergin is a proponent of the plan.

“The earlier you get primary care physicians involved with any big health initiative like that, it’s better,” Wergin said.

Wergin detailed Jefferson County’s vaccination rate and why he thinks enthusiasm about getting vaccinated is slowing down.

“I try to be an optimist about it but I’m definitely concerned that we’re not going to get to (herd immunity),” Wergin said. “I don’t know how things are going to shake out.”

“Today, Explained” is the 139th most listened to podcast on Apple Podcasts and number 25 in the news category. It is the 107th most popular podcast on Spotify and 12th in news. It has more than 7,000 reviews on Apple Podcasts.

Wergin, a Lincoln native, joined the JCH&L Fairbury Clinic in 2018. He says someone he knows works for Vox and contacted him about appearing on the podcast.
