LINCOLN — The recently fired village clerk in Craig, Nebraska, has been charged with stealing at least $5,000 over the past three years from the small farming community, Burt County Attorney Frank Barron said Thursday.
Kristie Jensen, who had served as clerk for at least 15 years, was charged with theft, a Class 2A felony, as well as two misdemeanors, abuse of public records and official misconduct, Barron said.
The theft charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Jensen was dismissed from her job last week by the Craig Village Board, which cited preliminary results of a state audit.
Calls to Jensen’s home have gone unanswered this week. Craig is a farm town of about 200 residents, located about 45 miles north of Omaha.
