Elkhorn’s new high school has a name. Which direction did the district go?

There were no gasps of surprise when Elkhorn Public Schools’ leaders revealed the chosen name for the district’s third high school: Elkhorn North. Elkhorn stuck to its playbook of geographically based names Monday night, when the school board voted 5-0 to christen the new school Elkhorn North High School. Board member Aaron Clark was not present. It will follow in the footsteps of the pragmatically named Elkhorn High and Elkhorn South High. Superintendent Bary Habrock said directional naming can be helpful for families, especially those moving in from outside the Elkhorn area. And the district does not name schools after people, he said. The building will be at 180th Street and West Maple Road. The school will sit just south of Grandview Middle School and Sagewood Elementary School — many of the names of district elementary and middle schools nod to nearby housing developments or nature. Officials hope to break ground by July 15, and the school is slated to open in August 2020. Last month, the district awarded a $66.27 million construction contract for the school to Lincoln-based Sampson Construction. Attendance boundaries haven’t been drawn up, but the new school is planned to ease crowding at Elkhorn High, which is close to capacity. A committee of educators, future students and others will begin meeting to come up with ideas for school colors and a mascot.
