Elderly couple killed in crash in north-central Nebraska

An elderly husband and wife were killed Tuesday when their minivan collided with a semitrailer truck in north-central Nebraska. Alphis Casteel, 87, and Norma Casteel, 85, both of Sargent, Nebraska, were pronounced dead at the scene near Taylor in Loup County, a Nebraska State Patrol spokesman said Wednesday. Investigators determined that Alphis Casteel was driving a Dodge Caravan about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday when he attempted to turn south from Nebraska Highway 91 onto U.S. Highway 183. The minivan was struck by a northbound semitrailer truck driven by Michael Mooney, 62, of Broken Bow, Nebraska.
Mooney was taken to a hospital in Ord with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.
