SYRACUSE – Randy Dunster and his family of eight moved from the county to the city a few months ago leaving behind the luxury of having farm fresh eggs.
Dunster, who resides at the corner of 4th Street and Locust in Syracuse, is city clerk at Nebraska City.
He drafted an ordinance in 2017 for the city of Nebraska City to allow for urban poultry and has adjusted the ordinance to possibly fit the city of Syracuse.
Dunster says the Nebraska City ordinance has good neighbor provisions, such as restrictions on flocks and spacing.
Dunster does not see a problem with chickens, quail , pheasant and mantams coming into the city limits as long as ordinances are followed.
When asked if he saw a problem with the turkey vultures and or coyotes in the area.
Dunster’s reply was” no more than the dog or cat food left out or the trash can left uncovered”
He will have a locked building for his animals to be placed when necessary.
The city council expects to take up the matter at its May meeting.
