ELWOOD, Neb. — A 73-year-old motorist died Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident 3 miles east of Elwood on Nebraska Highway 23.
The crash, which involved a Dodge Ram pickup and an Aurora Cooperative fuel truck, occurred about 9:30 a.m., said Gosper County Sheriff Dennis Ocken.
The fuel truck was westbound and the pickup eastbound when the pickup crossed the center line and hit the fuel truck head on. The pickup sustained heavy front-end damage. “The fuel truck’s tank did not rupture, only the fuel used to propel the vehicle caught on fire,” Ocken said.
The driver of the fuel truck, Christopher Brink, 43, of Holdrege, suffered minor injuries.
The Gosper County Sheriff’s Office, Elwood Fire and Rescue, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene. A medical helicopter was called and landed on Highway 23 as medics tried to stabilize the pickup’s driver.
The driver, Marlow Anderson of Lincoln, later died at the scene from crash injuries.
