The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services closed an Omaha day care Tuesday evening after it says it learned that sheriff’s deputies searched the owner’s home and found more than 2 pounds of marijuana and a loaded gun.
Joquana Goynes, doing business as Klassy Kidz Corner at 5001 Leavenworth St., can no longer provide care for any children other than her own, a press release from the department said.
According to an affidavit filed by a department program manager:
The agency learned Tuesday that Goynes had been arrested March 7 and later charged with manufacturing, distributing or possessing with intent to distribute a controlled substance while possessing a firearm, possessing more than a pound of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp. All of the charges are felonies. The drugs and gun were found March 7 in her home near 41st and Ida Streets, the affidavit says.
Goynes, 41, can request a hearing within 15 days. Officials are notifying parents.
According to the affidavit, Goynes violated child care regulations by breaking the law, possessing a controlled substance and failing to notify the department of the criminal charges against her.
She pleaded not guilty to the charges in district court last week, court records say.
