Choice Foods fire in Madison causes evacuations

MADISON, Neb. — A road was blocked off in northeast Nebraska and customers were evacuated when a fire erupted inside of a grocery store.

Madison Fire officials on the scene say an aisle filled with paper ignited inside of the building.

Officials say within just a few minutes of arriving the fire was contained, though the damage may be more extensive after the owner checks the inventory for contamination.

While they were able to douse the flames quickly, officials say the situation could have been much worse.

“There was some highly flammable stuff very close to the aisle we were in,” said Madison Assistant Fire Chief Paul Kellen. “I’m talking charcoal, lighter fluid, chemicals.”

Officials say the fire marshal will be dispatched to the scene to investigate the cause.

They say the jury is still out whether the fire was accidental or deliberate.
