Chappell man builds house made of storage containers

Just off interstate 80 near Chappell lives Lonnie Dallegge. He lives like most other ranchers do, with one big exception: his house is made from storage containers.

“Well I’d seen them on the internet and decided that if I was going to build one, that’s what I was going to do,” Dallegge said. “My friend and I got together and drew up some plans and we started.”

Dallegge built the house with the help of some close friends and family in 2017. The house in insulated, has heating, electricity, plumbing and everything else you find in a regular home.

You can hardly tell that it’s made of four 8×40 foot containers. Dallegge says the containers were laid next to each other and then concrete was used to fill in the gaps. For other parts of the house like the front entrance, old wood from barns was used to for the interior.

As for those old wood-built homes, Dallegge says he’d never go back.

“I like it,” he said. “It’s quiet, solid, I don’t have to worry about any hail damage or anything like that because I’m sitting in steel.”
