NEBRASKA CITY - The National Weather Service’s forecast for winter storm Hunter includes flash freezing, with air temperatures expected to drop from up to 53 degrees today to the teens by Thursday.
Temperatures are forecast to drop from Wednesday’s high of 53 degrees to below freezing at 4 a.m. Thursday. By noon, thermometers will show 17 degrees and people outdoors will feel like its negative six.
Weather observers say temperature drops of 40 to 50 degrees occur regularly around the world. Last year, Cape Giradeau, Mo., experience a temperature drop from 70 to 11 degrees.
In 1901, the temperature in Evansville, Ind., dropped from 65 to 0 in a single day.
The Weather Channel reports an extreme upper atmosphere affect in Spearfish, S.D., where the temperature plummeted 49 degrees in two minutes.
The temperature drop in today's forecast is in the range of 40 degrees, which may result in freezing fog or mist in the air forming as black ice on roadways.
The weather service warns that plummeting temperatures will cause wet surfaces to freeze quickly as the temperatures drop into the 20s and teens Thursday morning, causing icing on surfaces beneath the snow.
