SIDNEY – Bass Pro is closing the Cabela’s distribution centers in Sidney and Oshkosh, according to a statement released by the company who bought their outdoor gear rivals in late 2017.

The company notified employees about closing the two western Nebraska distribution centers to “better serve customers in the company’s new fast and free two-day shipping initiative.”

Officials with Bass Pro said the 77-year-old Sidney facility handles the least volume of the company’s distribution centers and stream lining the return process eliminated the need for the stand-alone Oshkosh return facility.

121 positions will be eliminated at the Sidney location and 41 people will lose their jobs at the Oshkosh return center by this spring.

Cabela’s has five other distribution centers across the country and Bass Pro plans to expand operations at those locations by adding more jobs and moving to to seven-day work weeks.

Cabela’s employed more than 2,000 people at the Sidney headquarters at the time it was purchased for $5 billion. Since then, many jobs or functions have shifted to Bass Pro’s headquarters in Springfield, Missouri.
